Mechanical Engineering

The department of Mechanical Engineering strives to train students in the mechanical engineering science as well as application of these scientific methods to conceive, organize and carry out scientific design of engineering system.

The department's professional programme includes a deeper study of a number of engineering sciences to which the students are introduced at the core curriculum level, experimental solution of physical problems, techniques and method of design of systems relevant to the contemporary industrial world.

The broad areas include Energy Conversion and Power Systems, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics, Mechanics of Solids and Stress Analysis, Manufacturing Science, Industrial Engineering, Automatic Controls and Engineering Design. Laboratory experience is considered to be an important part of the mechanical engineering programme. There are course oriented laboratories where the students do experimental work leading to a better understanding of physical situations.

HOD Message

It is my pleasure and honor to welcome you to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at GRIMT. M.E. has been thought of traditionally as a professional discipline, applying principle from engineering, physics in design, analysis, manufacturing of mechanical systems, and the associate transfer & flow of energies from one to another.

Our goal for DIPLOMA students is to give them a high quality engineering education that includes hands-on experience. Each of our faculty member is ready & willing to work in their research speciality with capable students on individual projects.

Vision

To be a centre of excellence in the field of Mechanical Engineering where the best of teaching, learning and research synergize.

Workshops

Learning is not complete without hands on experience. Fully equipped, safe and modern technical labs and workshops are provided with in the campus for imparting practical training to the learner. The central workshop consist of various shops for the practice of fitting, carpentry, smithy, forging, welding and foundry. The workshop has lathes, drilling machines, supervision of the competent faculty assisted by experienced technicians who not only train students but also ensure them their safety.

Laboratories

The department has following well furnished and well equipped laboratories having the latest software and hardware with a provision of departmental library.

  • Engineering Workshop
  • Applied mechanics Lab
  • Materials & Metallurgy Lab
  • Strength of Material Lab
  • Thermodynamics Lab
  • Workshop Technology Lab
  • Automobile Engine Lab
  • Hydraulics & Hydraulic Machine Lab
  • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Lab
  • Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Lab

Engineering Workshop

Mechanical Engineering Workshop is a place where students acquire knowledge on the operation of various processes involved in manufacturing and production. The Workshop Practice course makes students competent in handling practical work in engineering environment. Workshop is the center of learning about engineering Materials, manufacturing practices, equipments, tools and safety precaution to be observed in manufacturing operations.

Workshop further divided into: Machine Shop, Welding Shop, Foundry Shop, Carpentry Shop, Fitting Shop

Applied mechanics Lab

Mechanisms form the basis of any machine and it is an assemblage of rigid bodies so that they move upon each other with definite relative motion. Demonstration exercises are provided with wide varieties of transmission element models to understand machine kinematics. Various experiments with governors, gyroscopes, balancing machines and universal vibration facilities are available to understand machine dynamics.

Materials & Metallurgy Lab

Understanding of how materials behave like they do, and why they differ in properties was only possible with the atomistic understanding allowed by quantum mechanics.

Strength of Material Lab

In this laboratory, students will have the opportunity to apply loads to various materials under different equilibrium conditions. The student will perform tests on materials in tension, compression, torsion, bending, and impact.

Thermodynamics Lab

Steam Generation and Power focuses how electricity is generated in thermal power plants. This lab covers study of various equipments like high and low pressure boilers with mountings and accessories, condenses, Impulse and reaction turbines, Cooling towers, heaters, air compressors, economizers, different cycles of power generation and efficiency.

Workshop Technology Lab

Intro to Manufacturing Technology is a broad exploratory course that introduces students to the manufacturing industry. Though hands-on activities students will learn how manufactures use technology to change raw materials into finished products. The course will include a brief history of manufacturing, social impacts, types of manufacturing production, design processes, properties of materials, manufacturing processes, safe use of tools and equipment, free enterprise and marketing principles, and career exploration.

Automobile Engine Lab

This lab is regarding internal combustion engines and their performance, parts and recent advancements. Some of the experiments which are performed by students are performance studies of both C.I. and S.I. engines, studies on the calorific values, exhaust gas characteristics, extensive studies of bio-diesel with both engines, types of air compressors, ignition system etc.

Hydraulics & Hydraulic Machine Lab

Hydraulics and Hydraulic Machine, or the study of liquids, is an important area for Mechanical Engineers. Whether designing a steam engine, or working on a pump or turbine, Mechanical Engineers need to know how the water or liquid is going to move or operate.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Lab

Refrigeration is a process of moving heat from one location to another in controlled conditions. Air conditioning can be used in both domestic and commercial environments. This lab covers study of refrigeration cycles, equipments and their performance.

Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Lab

CAD is the use of computer technology for design and design documentation. CAD/CAM applications are used to both design a product and program manufacturing processes, specifically, CNC machining.
